What is a distributed fulfillment network?

What it is

A distributed fulfillment network is a 3PL infrastructure model where inventory is split across multiple warehouses positioned in different regions, so every order ships from the warehouse closest to the customer. The opposite is a single mega-warehouse model, where every order originates from one central hub and crosses multiple shipping zones to reach buyers.

Why it matters

The reason brands move to a distributed network is structural: shipping zones drive 60-70% of the cost variance between orders, and a parcel shipped from zone 1 to zone 1 costs roughly half what the same parcel costs zone 1 to zone 8. A distributed network compresses zones on every order, dropping average shipping cost and accelerating transit times in the same move.

With one warehouse, every order ships from one location. A customer in California buying from a New Jersey warehouse pays zone-8 rates and waits 5+ days. Spoke fulfillment centers specialize in outbound: focused picking, packing, and shipping at fast pace. Continental line-haul connects the network, moving freight between regions at fleet rates. Each facility does one job well, instead of every warehouse trying to do every job at half-pace.

Line-haul is Jetpack’s middle-mile truck network. Every cross-country package rides line-haul between Jetpack hubs by default, then a last-mile carrier picks up at the regional hub closest to your customer. The carrier bills you for a regional shipment, not a coast-to-coast haul. Lower zones, faster transit, fewer hands on the package, day one. There’s nothing to opt into. It’s how the network moves freight.

Multi-node fulfillment is the same concept as distributed fulfillment or hub-and-spoke fulfillment: a model where a brand's inventory is split across multiple warehouses ("nodes") so orders can ship from the node nearest to each customer. The term "multi-node" is more common in enterprise supply-chain contexts; ecommerce brands more often hear "distributed fulfillment" or "multi-warehouse fulfillment." Whatever the term, the operational model is the same: stock placed across regions, orders routed to the closest node, lower shipping zones and faster transit on every shipment. Line-haul is the long-distance transportation of freight between two points in a supply chain, typically between fulfillment centers, sort hubs, or distribution centers (as opposed to last-mile, which is the final leg from a regional hub to the customer's door). In a distributed fulfillment network, line-haul handles the movement of replenishment inventory between regional warehouses, often using consolidated freight to keep per-unit costs near zero. Jetpack runs continental line-haul between its hubs, which is how a brand can ship to one Hero Hub and have stock automatically routed to regional warehouses without paying parcel-rate freight on every leg.

A distribution center (DC) moves inventory in bulk: pallets and cases in, pallets and cases out to stores or other warehouses. A fulfillment center (FC) picks individual customer orders and ships parcels the same day. Jetpack’s network runs both jobs in separate layers: FCs near your customers do the picking, regional sort and receiving hubs take inbound freight and carrier handoffs, and the line-haul middle mile ties them together.
