What is returns management?
What it is
Returns management is the process of moving a product back from a customer to a fulfillment center, inspecting it, and deciding what happens next. Restock if the product is unused and sellable. Dispose if it’s damaged beyond resale. Quarantine if it needs further review. Reverse logistics is the broader term for the same flow, often used in B2B and enterprise supply-chain contexts.
Where returns go wrong
At most 3PLs, returns disappear into a black hole: units restocked without inspection, no photo trail, and a count you find out was wrong at the next promo. The damage surfaces weeks later.
How Jetpack does it
Jetpack handles the physical-processing layer of returns. We process every return to spec, configured per SKU in your dashboard. Custom inspection steps. Photo documentation. Restock, dispose, or quarantine rules. For the customer-facing side, use Jetpack’s built-in returns portal or keep the platform you already run.
Bring your returns platform.
Jetpack runs the warehouse half of every return: per-SKU rules, inspection, photos, restock or quarantine. Refunds and exchanges can be managed by our built-in customer-facing returns portal, or any of the below four third-party integrations. Something more custom? Our open API can handle it all.
Loop Returns
Convert refunds into exchanges and store credit.
AfterShip Returns
Branded self-service portal customers actually use.
Redo
All-in-one post-purchase: tracking, returns, protection.
Corso
Replace lost or damaged orders without eating the cost.
Always fighting for you.
Returns are quiet until they’re not. Jetpack stays engaged so a missed inspection or a misrouted SKU gets flagged before it becomes your problem.

Frequently asked.
Three things set Jetpack apart: Jetpack Care, our IQ engine suite, and radical transparency. Jetpack Care: every brand gets a dedicated team on Slack that knows your products, workflows, and priorities, not a ticket queue, not a chatbot. Three proprietary IQ engines handle the rest: MultiHub IQ uses ML to position inventory across 60+ warehouses by customer geography; Carrier IQ optimizes carrier selection per package in real time; Delivery IQ monitors shipments in transit, flagging delays before your customer notices and auto-filing claims when eligible. All-in rate cards: no monthly, emergency, or processing fees. No long-term contracts: your inventory is yours to move whenever you want.
Most ecommerce brands hit the inflection point between 200 and 2,000 orders per month, when self-fulfillment starts eating time that should go to product and marketing. Signals: outgrown warehouse space, missing SLAs, climbing shipping costs from negotiating as a single brand. Jetpack partners with brands shipping 1,000+ orders monthly, leveraging the combined volume of 5,000+ brands on our network for carrier rates single shippers can't access.
3PL pricing usually has four parts: storage, billed by the space you use; receiving, billed for the time it takes to check your inventory in; pick-and-pack, billed per order and per item; and shipping, billed by weight, size, and zone. What you pay depends on the provider and your volume. Jetpack's pricing strips out the fees most 3PLs pile on: no per-order processing fee, no charge for standard packaging like boxes and poly mailers, and no charge for your first pick. Then three levers pull the rate down: the combined volume of 5,000+ brands on our network, Carrier IQ routing every order to the lowest-cost carrier, and MultiHub IQ placing inventory closer to your buyers, which cuts zone-4+ shipments by up to 85% and overall costs by up to 30%.
Both customer-initiated returns (a customer requests a return and ships the unit back) and Return-to-Sender (when a carrier delivery fails and the package routes back to us). Both flows feed into the same inspection and disposition pipeline, so your team only learns one process.
Yes. You set Restock, Dispose, or Quarantine per product in advance, so every return follows the rule you configured. You can also define up to 3 custom inspection steps per SKU, with backup actions if a unit fails inspection. A skincare item returned with the seal broken? Auto-quarantine. A simple replenishable that just needs a quick check? One-step restock. Each SKU runs the way you decide once.
Yes. Jetpack includes a built-in customer-facing returns portal that can manage refunds and exchanges, and you can just as easily keep the platform you already run: Loop Returns, AfterShip Returns, Redo, and Corso integrate natively, and our API supports your own build. Behind whichever portal you choose, Jetpack handles the physical receiving, inspection, and disposition.
You set the backup action when you configure the SKU, typically Quarantine or Dispose. Failed units never silently get restocked back into sellable inventory. For lot-tracked items, photo documentation is uploaded to the return record, so you can verify exactly what came back and why it landed where it did.
Three ways: manually from the Jetpack dashboard, automatically via a supported returns platform (Loop, AfterShip, Redo, or Corso), or programmatically via our API. Every return gets a unique RMA identifier so it's traceable end to end.
Reverse logistics is the supply-chain term for any movement of product backward through the chain, most commonly customer returns but also recalls, warranty replacements, and end-of-life disposal. For an ecommerce brand, reverse logistics and returns management overlap heavily: both refer to receiving the parcel back, inspecting the item, and deciding what to do with it (restock, refurbish, dispose, or quarantine). Reverse logistics is the more common term in B2B and enterprise contexts; returns management is more common in DTC.
They overlap almost entirely. Returns management is the operational practice of handling individual customer returns: receive the parcel, inspect the product, restock or dispose, refund the customer. Reverse logistics is the broader supply-chain concept covering any reverse-direction movement of goods, including returns plus recalls, warranty exchanges, refurbishments, and end-of-life disposal. For an ecommerce brand running Jetpack, the day-to-day practice is the same regardless of which term you use.
Yes. Jetpack has a built-in customer-facing returns portal where your customers can initiate returns and exchanges, so you can run the whole flow with us and nothing else. Brands that already use Loop, AfterShip Returns, Redo, or Corso can keep them: those integrations are native, and the portal layer syncs automatically with the warehouse layer either way. If you've built your own flow, the API exposes everything it needs.
